Hanabi

25 Mins Ages 8+ Cooperative Card Placement 2 - 5 Players

Give hints to create sets of fireworks and try to avoid a pyrotechnical disaster.

Hanabi—named for the Japanese word for "fireworks"—is a cooperative game in which players try to create the perfect fireworks show by placing the cards on the table in the right order. (In Japanese, hanabi is written as 花火; these are the ideograms flower and fire, respectively.)

The deck consists of five different colours of cards, numbered 1–5. For each colour, players must try to place a row in the correct order from 1–5.

Sounds easy, right? Well, not quite, as in this game you hold your cards so that they're visible only to other players. To assist other players in playing a card, you must give them hints regarding the numbers or the colors of their cards.

Players must act as a team to avoid errors and to finish the fireworks display before they run out of cards.

Create a raft from cards piece by piece, using rafters to help balance the build.

Rafter Five

20 Mins Ages 7+ Dexterity 1 - 5 Players

In Rafter Five, you and your fellow players want to build as large a raft as possible — but you want to end up being the only one who can board it.

To start, stack the box top and bottom to create a base, then place the five wooden rafter pieces on the starting card on top of the base.

On a turn, lift a rafter, place a raft card on the playing area, replace the rafter, then place one of your treasure chests somewhere on the raft...ideally in a precarious position because if someone else knocks off this chest, they must keep it in their hold.

If a player collects five treasure chests owned by other players in their hold, they're out of the game! (You can knock off your own chests without penalty, but you're making the game easier for everyone else.)

Cat in the Box

20 - 40 Mins Ages 13+ Trick-Taking 2 - 5 Players

in tricks without knowing the colour of your cards until you play them.

Cat in the Box is a trick-taking card game from Japan, based upon ideas from quantum mechanics. Players play cards from their hands of different values, but the colour of the card is not determined until the card is played, and the cat is let out of the box!

As a player leads with a card from their hand, they declare its colour. A player's marker goes onto the communal research board, covering the value for that colour. Subsequent cards must have different values of the same colour if possible. However, a player may declare that they do not have any more cards of that colour, and so play the same value but in a different colour. That player now marks their own board for Do Not Have in that colour.

The highest card of the colour lead wins the trick, unless a card is declared as red, the trump colour.

Crucially, all cards values and colours played out must be unique, otherwise a paradox is formed, ending the round.

Think Words

30 Mins Ages 8+ Word Shouting 2 - 10 Players

Each round in Think Words, one player draws a topic card, then starts the timer. In the next ten seconds, that player must give a single word answer that fits within the topic, press down the letter key in a special electronic device that corresponds to the first letter of that word, and restart the timer. The next player must then think of a word for the topic that starts with a different letter, press down that starting letter, and restart the timer.

If a player runs out of time, they're out for the round. If only one player remains in a round, they collect the topic card. If players manage to press down all of the letters before knocking all but one player out of a round, the players reset the device, draw a new topic card, then start the timer again, this time needing to give two answers for the topic – each starting with a different letter — within the allotted time. Whoever collects the most topic cards wins!
