20cm Maneki Neko Lucky Cat - Handmade Japanese Good Luck Figure
20cm Maneki Neko Lucky Cat - Handmade Japanese Good Luck Figure
Maneki Neko
You may know of the lucky cat, but did you know it's thought to have originated in Japan?
The iconic white cat with one paw in the air is said to have originated form the town of Gotokuji, now home to a lucky cat (Maneki Neko in Japanese) temple.
As the story goes a Samurai Lord was travelling during a thunderstorm, when he saw a beckoning cat beside a tree. Upon walking over to it his life was saved as lightning soon struck where he was standing! In honour of this lucky cat he rebuilt the crumbling temple nearby. This is the site of Gotokuji Temple.
This delightful lucky cat figure is made out of papier mache, by traditional artisans in the town of Takasaki Japan, a region best known for producing the Daruma good luck doll.
Hand painted and crafted by a workshop of generational artisans, it's a special item indeed, full of luck and craftsmanship!
