The aim of the game
To win, collect the most tiles, by picking and placing ones from the bag wisely.
To set up
- Put the tokens in the bag and shake ‘em up.
- For 4 or 5 players use all the tiles.
- For 3 players remove 15 - 20 at random.
- And for 2 players remove 30-40.
- Put any removed tiles to the side.
- The last player who put their feet in the sea begins.
To play the game
On your turn, take a token from the bag, look at it secretly, pick a side and play it.
- Blue tiles are placed into the sea in the centre.
-
White tiles are placed in front of you to form your seaside.
- If you place a blue tile, you get another go.
- If you place a white tile, use its effect.
Sandpipers let you take as many isopods as you like from the sea and stack them underneath it on your seaside.
If ever you play another sandpiper you must take the same amount of isopods from the sea as there are under your other one, otherwise you’ll have to discard whichever is the smaller stack from the game.
For example: If I have a sandpiper with 3 isopods underneath, and on a future turn place another sandpiper and stack 4 isopods from the sea under that one, I’d have to discard this sandpiper and the 3 isopods under it.
If you play a beach, take as many shells from the sea as you have beaches in front of you and place them in a stack.
- You can still play a beach even if there are no shells in the sea.
- Place beaches in a visible row.
If you play a wave, add it to your seaside, choose one of your beaches to flip, if you have one, and play it as if you’d just taken it from the bag.
For example: if I play a wave and choose to flip this beach to a shell, I’d place it into the sea and take another go.
- You can look at your beaches before deciding which to flip.
- You can still play a wave if you don’t have a beach.
- Place your waves in a stack.
Rocks work in pairs. Your first one does nothing. When you play your second rock, stack it on the first one, then, take all the crabs from the sea, plus one from any opponent and place them in a pile in your seaside.
- You can only take crabs each time you make a new pair of rocks.
Game end and scoring
Take it in turns, choosing a tile from the bag and playing its effect until the bag is empty.
The player who has the most waves takes any tiles left in the sea. If players tie for waves, distribute sea tiles evenly, leaving any odd ones in the centre.
Stack up all the tokens on your seaside and total them, whoever has the most wins!
If it’s a draw, share the victory.
Solo mode
You can also play Seaside solo.
- Put all of the tokens in the bag and play as normal.
- If placing a tile means that there are a total of 7 tiles in the sea, OR 7 tiles of the same design in your seaside, end the game immediately, without applying that tile’s effect.
- If you have a wave on your seaside, take all the tiles left in the sea, total all your tiles and consult the table, to see how well you’ve done!
That’s Seaside, simple, nautical, stacking fun.
Enjoy!
