The aim of the game

To win, grow the most beautiful collection of plants and accessories, by collecting the resources to help nurture your collection.

    To set up

    • Put the nursery board in the centre of the table.
    • Give everyone a player board.
    • Separate the 60 resource and 42 item cards, shuffle them and place them face down on their marked spaces.
    • Give each player a beginner plant card, place it above your player board and put the rest away.
    • Shuffle the plant card deck and place it face down on its designated space, then turn 4 cards face up to its right to form the nursery row.
    • Place the resource tokens in easy reach.
    • Each player draws 6 resource cards and 2 item cards, keeping them a secret.

    To play the game

To begin, everyone simultaneously chooses a single card to play from their hand. Place this card face down in front of you and the rest of your hand to the left of your board.

Once everyone is ready, flip your chosen card face up.

If you played a resource card: take the number of resources shown from the supply, add them to your board, then discard the card.

    • If tokens run low, when you have 4 of a certain resource, you may place its token in the 4x box and put 3 back to the supply.

If you play a decoration card: place it in the indicated area under the right of your board. These will score you end game points.

    • For example, the workbench scores you 1 point per tool card you own.
    • There is no limit to the number or type of decorations you may have.

If you play a tool card: place it under the left of your board. Tools give you a special ability for the duration of the game.

    • For example, a watering can gives you an additional water token, each time you play a double water card.
    • You can collect as many tools as you like and stack their benefits.

Finally, if you don’t want to use your card: you can buy a plant with it instead. When you flip your card, shout ‘nursery!’, discard it, choose a face up plant from the nursery and place it above your board.

    • Immediately fill the empty space with a new plant from the deck.

If multiple players shout ‘nursery’, you must pick your plants in numerical order, from lowest to highest, using the numbers on the bottom of the card you placed.

    • You may have a maximum of 6 plants in total, so choose wisely!

After everyone has flipped their cards and performed their actions, pick up the cards your neighbour placed to their left and go again. After 8 turns, the round ends and it’s time to feed your plants.

Each plant has the resources it requires to grow depicted on the bottom. If you have ALL the resources necessary, put them in the supply and place a growth token on the lowermost spot on the card. At the end, you’ll score points for each covered space by a token.

    • You may substitute 2 green thumb tokens for any one missing resource.
    • You may feed as many different plants as you like, as long as you have the resources.
    • You can only feed each plant once per round.
    • When all growth slots are covered a plant can no longer be fed.

After feeding plants, exchange every 2 resources you have left over for a growth token, placing them  in your propagation area. Remember every 2 green thumbs counts as any 1 resource.

Finally, after feeding and propagating, return any leftover resources to the supply.

Then, everyone draws 6 resource and 2 item cards and a new round begins, this time passing your hand to the right.

    Game end and scoring

After playing 4 full rounds, alternating the direction you pass your hand each time, the game ends and scoring begins.

    • Total the number of points under each growth token placed on your plants.
    • Score 1 point per growth token in your propagation area
    • And score any points earnt from your decoration cards.
    • You may score multiple copies of the same decoration
    • A  single plant or tool may count towards scoring multiple decorations.

Whoever has the most points wins!

In case of a tie, whoever has the most growth tokens on their plants wins.  If it’s still a tie, share the victory.

    That’s Planted, a green-fingered, card-collecting game.

    Enjoy!
